She graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and was a chef under Jean-Georges Vongerichten at Vong New York. In 1994, Freitag was appointed an executive chef at Verbena. In 2003 she teamed up with Godfrey Polistina to start up the New York restaurant Cesca Enoteca & Trattoria. In 2012, Freitag was featured on the television show Iron Chef America Countdown. From 2009 to 2012 , she was a part of the TV series The Next Iron Chef. She starred in Unique Eats from 2010 to 2013. Freitag has been an expert judge and contestant on the show Chopped since the year 2009. Since 2009, she was a judge and contestant on the show Chopped. She is currently hosting the TV show American Diner Revival with Ty Pennington. She was a student at Cedar Grove High School, Class of 1987 (then called Memorial High School), in which her teacher of home economics, Joan Levine, suggested that Freitag might be interested in taking a course at the Culinary Institute of America.
